# Design refinement

Review module removal and reserve access through the layout.

Source: https://docs.solesca.com/editor/refinement/

Refinement helps remove unsuitable modules and reserve access. Review the resulting module count and layout whenever you change a rule.

## Refinement rules

Open the design's refinement controls. Available rules depend on the field types and whether the design uses terrain tracking.

- **Remove shaded modules** removes modules according to the cutoff you choose. This rule is unavailable on terrain designs.
- **Generate equipment walkways** reserves access to the selected types of roof equipment.
- **Remove hanging modules** removes isolated or incomplete portions according to the chosen level.

Inspect the preview and removal counts. Use the controls to review removed modules before accepting the design.

## Fire walkways

On a roof field, open the boundary edge's menu. Set **Fire walkway spacing** to the distance required for the project, then use the action to set the azimuth and create fire walkways.

Review the generated walkways, setbacks, and access routes. The selected spacing is your design input; check it against the project's requirements.

## Individual edits

Use the layout editing controls to remove individual modules or frames where needed. Recheck the layout after changing racking, alignment, or refinement settings.

## Check the electrical design

Removing modules can affect string lengths and inverter allocation. Review [inverter groups](https://docs.solesca.com/editor/inverter-groups/) and [Stringing](https://docs.solesca.com/engineering/wiring/#stringing) after refinement, then model the current design.
